50 to 60 years old vines give the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Pellingen Erste Lage (which Franz Proidl always calls Alte Reben instead of Pellingen) a dark and smoky aroma as well as its terroir-driven character. The color is white gold, the nose very mineral and slightly smoky but there are also white and citric fruit flavors in the background. On the juicy palate ripe white and yellow peach aromas are mixed with citrus flavors whereas the full body is counterpointed by a racy acidity and piquant minerality. This is an intense, powerful and elegant Veltliner whose long and complex finish quotes grapefruit and passion fruit aromas and leaves a salty aftertaste.

Great terroir wines are dominated by their specific terroir rather than the grape variety they are made of, or so one says. Proidl's 2013 Grüner Veltliner Ehrenfels Erste Lage is a good example though still so immensely young. Grown in the terraced center of the steep site between 230 and 270 meters above sea level and handpicked in the third week of November the grapes were macerated and then fermented spontaneously in small stainless steel tanks until end of March 2014 before they were aged in 2000 liter barrels until mid-August. Two weeks later the wine was in my glass and showed lovely clear, ripe and intense lime (Riesling!) flavors with an animating background of crushed bedrock. Very fruity and intense on the palate, this is a mouthful of super ripe and sweet fruit (Riesling!) with a backbone of mineral structure and concise acidity. This full-bodied wine has an impressive length and complexity as well as a great aging potential. Only after I was poured the true Ehrenfels Riesling did I noticed that this wine was indeed a Grüner Veltliner. Thank you for this, Franz Proidl!

The monumental 2013 Riesling Pfenningberg Erste Lage comes from the same altitude like the Ehrenfels (230-270 meters) but a even warmer vineyard. According to the Erste Lagen cataloge this south-west site is the warmest spot in Senftenberg. The grapes were handpicked during the first week of November and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. The color of the final wine is a brilliant white gold. Freshly poured one noses intense, super-matured Riesling berries which are highlighted by citrus aromas plus the piquant gravel and bedrock flavors that are characteristic for the Pfenningberg. On the palate this is a very powerful and opulent Riesling with lime aromas and the texture of sweet confiture. However, this wine is far from being broad in the mouth since the mineral structure, piquant acidity and salty finish transform it into a very complex and persistent wine with a great finish. A monument indeed.

The 2013 Riesling Ehrenfels Erste Lage was picked in two steps, in the beginning and the middle of November. It fermented in stainless steel tanks until the end of March (Proidl inoculated the young wine with Champagne yeast to finish the natural fermentation) and aged in old barrels until August. The wine passed the process of malolactic fermentation but this is just for you to know (and to destroy your reservations re: this issue) – indeed it is not detectable here. What is on offer is a brilliantly citrus colored Riesling with a lovely, perfumed bouquet of crushed rocks with orange and lime flavors that is very pure. This is a thrilling, extremely mineral-scented and tightly structured Riesling with a searing acidity and stimulating piquancy. Though almost drying in its pure, stone-dust taste there is an impressive fruit concentration on the palate and a long aftertaste which gives this outstanding Austrian Riesling great aging potential. Lovely orange blossoms also emerge in the finishing aromas.

The 2013 Riesling Senftenberger Hochäcker is classified only as Niederösterreich but not as Kremstal DAC or DAC Reserve although this would have been the right category if not Franz Proidl's wine stopped fermenting a day or two too early (!) in the beginning of May (!!). The wine, which was harvested 27 November 2013, stopped fermentation itself with 10 grams of residual sugar and, thus, could not be classified as DAC or even Erste Lage. Its aroma is just lovely offering ripe and healthy Riesling aromas of ripe apples, citrus and stone fruits with just a hint of honey but much more mineral flavors. The palate is very firm, piquant and salty but also rich, concentrated, sweet and powerful. One gram less of sugar would have meant a touch more alcohol and this might have brought the wine out of balance. Now it tastes really dry with just a lovely juiciness. Good length and potential.

Wine & Spirtis Magazine

Das Wine & Spirits Magazine hat unseren Riesling Ehrenfels 2011 mit 94 Punkten ausgezeichnet. Damit ist er der am besten bewerteste Riesling Österreichs des Jahrgangs 2011.

"Franz Proidl farms 49 acres in Seftenberg, at Kremstal´s western end. This wine, off 2.5 acres of 25-year-old vines on primary rock, is admittedly flamboyant, but with such structure and control it´s hard to turn away. The sweetness of the orange-toned fruit is matched by meaty depth; the warm cardamom spice finds a contrast with a cucumber-snap. It feels all of a piece, more like food than wine. As one taster put it, ?You don?t need a lot of it, but you might find yourself wanting a lot of it.?"
